Do permanent lights survive Ontario winters?
Short answer: yes. A properly installed permanent lighting system is sealed against moisture and rated for outdoor use all year, so it keeps working through snow, ice and freeze and thaw cycles. You do not need to cover it, clear it or turn it off for the winter.
Cold and temperature swings
The LEDs and connectors are sealed, IP65-rated components made for year-round outdoor use, from deep cold to summer heat. Cold does not shorten LED life. If anything, LEDs run more efficiently in low temperatures.
Snow sitting on the track
The lights do not produce enough heat to melt snow, and they do not need to. The sealed aluminum track keeps moisture away from the electronics, so snow or ice resting on top does not cause a short or corrosion. When the snow clears, the lights look exactly as they did before.
Freeze and thaw cycles
Freeze and thaw is the hardest test for anything mounted outdoors in Ontario, and it is where adhesive-mounted kits tend to fail. A track that is mechanically fastened along its length stays in place as materials expand and contract.
Wind on rural and open properties
On open lots in Caledon, Mono and Erin, wind matters as much as cold. A fastened track has no loose strings or clips for a winter storm to catch, which is the usual way seasonal lights get torn down.
